A: First – Turn Your Radio OFF – NOT Down. While on hold, you will be able to hear the show.
  1. Be sure to call between 11:30am - 3:00pm PT (2:30pm - 6:00pm ET; 1:30pm - 5:00pm CT), Monday-Friday. 1-800-DRLAURA (1-800-375-2872). Call from a land line phone, or get stationary with your cellphone.
  2. Once you get through to the screener, be prepared with your question. Focus on the overall philosophical problem, not your specifics. Immediately, tell the screener how you expect to be helped by Dr. Laura.
  3. Write your question down so you do not forget while you are on hold.
When speaking with Dr. Laura:
  1. You will briefly hear some static. Following that you will be on the air with Dr. Laura.
  2. Relax.
  3. Stick with your original story.
  4. Don’t present on-going never-ending layers of problems.
  5. When asked a “Yes” or “No” question, don’t respond with “I don’t know.”

She was in private practice for 12 years. She’s also been on the faculty of the Department of Biology at the University of Southern California, and the GraduatePsychology Department at Pepperdine University.

She has received an award from the Office of the Secretary of Defense for her Exceptional Public Service, and among her numerous other honors, has been the first and only woman ever to win the National Association of Broadcasters’ prestigious Marconi Award for Network/Syndicated Personality.

In addition, Dr. Laura holds multiple trophies for sailboat racing, and is a Black Belt in martial arts. In the lastseveral years, she has designed and handcrafted elegant jewelry for charitable causes, most recently for Operation Family Fund, which provides financial assistance to families of military personnel severely injured or killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. She has raised over $1 million for Operation Family Fund with the sale of her jewelry four times per year on her website www.drlaura.com, and with theproceeds from her 60th Birthday Bash benefit.

Her newest book, "In Praise of Stay-At-Home Moms," was released by HarperCollins in April, 2009. She has been married to Dr. Lewis Bishop for 24 years. Their son, Deryk, enlisted in the US Army in 2005, and hasreturned from a tour of duty in Afghanistan.
